Grape Agiorgitiko from Nemea:
Agiorgitiko is a red Greek wine grape variety that, as of 2012, was the most widely planted red grape variety in Greece, ahead of Xynomavro. Also known as The Blood of Heracles, it originates from the fight bewteen Heracles and the Lion of Nemea. They changed it to the name Agiogitiko when the Turks ruled over Greece and banned alcohol, they wanted to destroy the grapes, this when the Greeks made up a story that the wine was for sacrifice for Agios Giorgios (Saint George) and finally got its name Agiorgitiko! Rank: Cultivar
Higher classification: Common Grape Vine

Semeli was started by the Kokitas family based on vineyards outside Athens and in Nemea, where they overstretched themselves with a splendid hilltop winery and were bought by the chairman of the Bank of Piraeus. The new owner had the sense also to buy the Nassiakos winery in Mantinea and to employ the talented Leonidas Nassiakos as winemaker. They now make about 70,000 dozen of which 70% is white(mantinia and Semeli white). Red is 95% aghioghitiko and their top wines come from their own 15 hectare estate in Nemea.
